Each new Atrium Carceri offering shows further refinement. Kapnobatai ("those who walk in smoke") is the same kind of stuff as the two previous albums, but each and every one of the parts works better than before. The scene-painting background, samples in Japanese, slowly changing structures - everything is in place. A few New Age music like pieces have also been added. And the further the album runs, the more powerful it gets. This creates a highly effective ambient experience, in which as the mood is maintained, it is also constantly being intensified. This goes both for the tracks' internal structures and the entire album. Atrium Carceri's music is still highly cinematic, occasionally to the point of being corny (especially on Impaled Butterfly) - but it works. Works amazingly well. The first six tracks go by in a moody whole, and then Synaptic Transmissions takes the listener completely to another world. The background melody, non-painful buzzes and deep male voices form together an exceptionally intense whole. After a softer phase Torn Citadel of the Autarch brings yet another style into play through its rhythm. Monolith of Dreams turns out to be the weak link, but that's mainly just caused by a too familiar crying sample, so it's not a big problem. The true gem of the album is close to the end: Stained Pipes is a highly Archon Satani -like track that also shows precisely how one should proceed when using lots of speech samples. This is a very nicely working album and one of the best
cinematic-style dark ambient albums in the last few years. Powerful
as both background music and when listened to intensively. Jiituomas |
