This debut by the Norwegian project Avsky strongly reminds me of the best artists from the Cyclic Law label. It is musically very similar in style, in some way, but there is also another point in common: The basic elements are very familiar, but the way they have been used is new and very innovative. Silent Decay is precisely so familiar-seeming that it is easy to approach, but it's also unique enough so that it won't be discarded as a routine work. And it is definitely not the kind of stuff that grows on trees, as there is among the well-used familiar pieces also some highly original utilization of slow rhythms. It isn't all that clear at all times. For example, Mutual Assured Depression, while fine in itself, resembles Kammarheit very much, and Dying Suns the music of Visions. The most original tracks, Perpetual Cycle and Silver Night are also clearly the album's best. The first of those is more dissonant and experimental, the other one three and a half minutes of beautiful melody. What we have here is an artist to definitely keep in
mind, for while the music is already very good, it's obvious that there
is potential for even more. Buying this album is also a good move, especially
if one has already liked the music of the aforementioned Visions or
Kammarheit. Jiituomas |
