Brighter Death Now and Coph Nia are two CMI-artists I did not not expect to see a shared release from; the almost gothic and atmospheric Coph Nia and angstnoise pioneer BDN present two different extremes of the label. Yet they have now both ended up on the same record, both paying tribute to the old Swedish underground band Leather Nun. Both sides of the 12" ep contain a Leather Nun -cover from one of the artists. Coph Nia presents the track Prime Mover (sex mix) and BDN fittingly the track Slow Death (death mix).

Coph Nia´s song begins with a slow ambient-intro, until it properly starts with (indeed!) sexy rhytms and Aldenon´s dark singing, which brings to mind old goth bands like the Sisters of Mercy. Electronic backgrounds and gregorian samples provide something more in the spirit of industrial and dark ambient, but the general feel is more gothic. The track has a slow tempo but is nicely rhytmic and lasts long enough. Prime Mover also appears on Coph Nia´s new album Shape Shifter, but in a completely different version. And this version is much sexier.

BDN sounds very much like itself - minimal repetitive noise, deeply buried manic screaming and yelling and electronic whining. The noise is quite muffled, characteristically for BDN, and is very monotonous, which is essential to the style. Not among BDN:s best material but definitely not a bad track, being stylistically quite close to the album 1890.

The record is stylistically packaged in gold-lettered covers decorated with a fetishistic (and raunchy) nun photograph. The covers are the final detail that guarantees the cult value of this rare split record already at the time of it´s release, and within a few years it will certainly be a much wanted collector´s item.

Brighter Death Now ja Coph Nia ovat kaksi CMI-artistia joiden en olisi ihan heti odottanut tekevän yhteislevyä; tunnelmallista goottilaisuutta hipova Coph Nia ja angstinoisen pioneeri BDN edustavat nimittäin levymerkin kahta aivan eri ääripäätä. Kuitenkin he ovat nyt päätyneet samalle levylle jolla molemmat osoittavat kunnioitustaan vanhalle ruotsalaiselle underground-yhtyeelle Leather Nun. 12" ep:n molemmilla puolilla on yhden artistin Leather Nun-coverkappale. Ei BDN:n parhaimmistoa mutta ei missään nimessä huonokaan kappale, joka on tyylillisesti lähellä hiljaista *1890-albumia. Levy on pakattu tyylikkäästi kultapainatettuihin kansiin joita koristaa fetisistinen (ja huvittavan rivo) nunnavalokuva. Kannet viimeistäänkin takaavat tämän harvinaislaatuisen yhteistyölevyn kulttiarvon jo sen ilmestyessä ja muutaman vuoden päästä tämä tulee olemaan hyvin himoittu keräilyesine. John Björkman*
