Coph Nia / Mindspawn - Erotomechaniks

 

Tällä levyllä yhdistyvät tuotteliaan amerikkalaisen ambient-projekti Mindspawnin ja ruotsalaisen Coph Nian äänimaisemointityylit. Heti alkuun on pakko todeta, että levy on täysin instrumentaali - eli ne jotka odottavat siltä Aldenon Satorialin "Thelema Superstar" -meininkiä joutuvat väistämättä pettymään. Silti levyn sisältö ei tule yllätyksenä - tai pettymyksenä - niille, jotka pitivät Coph Nian ambientimmasta puolesta. Kuvataiteen innoittaman albumin äänimaailma on synkän kaunis, ja yllättävän pehmeä. Se ei ole ollenkaan niin mekaanisen kolkko kuin voisi luulla.

Levyn soundi on lähimpänä ehkä Cyclic Law-yhtiön tuotantojälkeä, mutta kappaleet artistien itsensä tyylisiä. Tausta on hyvin maalaileva, ja siihen liittyy pitkin matkaa milloin ujelluksia, milloin sointuja, milloin pientä rytmiä. Erotomechaniks on siksi oikein nautinnolista kuunneltavaa, mutta oikeastaan vain taustamusiikkina. Mitään uutta se ei tosiasiassa tarjoa. Siksi en voi välttyä jatkuvalta ajatukselta siitä, että kaksi näin lahjakasta artistia olisi voinut luoda vielä paljon hienompaakin tavaraa. Itsenäisenä teoksena tarkasteltuna se on silti niin hyvää synkän ambientin perustavaraa että miellyttänee kuulijoitaan. Ei se ihmeellinen ole, mutta ei myöskään sellainen joka unohtuisi hyllyyn.

This album combines the soundscaping styles of the productive American ambient band Mindspawn and the Swedish Coph Nia. The first thing that must be noted is that this is a completely instrumental album - thus those expecting it to contain Aldenon Satorial's "Thelema Superstar" style material will inevitably be disappointed in that regard. Yet the contents will not be surprise - or a disappointment - to those who have liked Coph Nia's more ambient side. The music on this visual arts -inspired album is darkly beautiful, as well as surprisingly soft. It is not at all as mechanically gloomy as one might guess. The tone is quite close to the production style common to records published by Cyclic Law, but the songs are very much recognizable as being creations of the artists in question. The background is very evocative, and to it are added small things along the way - be they squeals, notes, melodies or tiny rhythms. Erotomechaniks is therefore a very enjoyable listen, but essentially only as background music. In reality it does not offer anything truly new. Thus one cannot avoid the nagging feeling that the two artists here could have created something far more magnificent. Examined as an isolated album, Erotomechaniks is still very good, if common, dark ambient, and very pleasing to its listeners. It is not really special, but neither is it an album one would forget on the shelf after a few listenings.
