Zoomonk - Milk Drops

Zoomonkin linja on yhtenäistynyt selkeästi sitten viimevuotisen Weekend Coctail -demon. Tietystä sekavuudesta on päästy eroon, mutta tilalle on tullut tiettyä puuduttavuutta. Kokeellisuutta ja punk-henkeä on paljon vähemmän, muutamaa poikkeusraitaa (kuten rujon kaunis Shine) lukuun ottamatta. Ja tyylikäs junnaavuus, joka on tämän yhtyeen selkeä valtti, ei ehdi pääsemään kunnolla oikeuksiinsa kun kappaleiden keskipituus on vain kahden minuutin luokkaa. Mitä rajummin bändi veivaa, sitä vahvempaa syntyy - esimerkiksi Cannibal on kerrassaan mainio kiukkuisessa krauttiudessaan.

Vokaaleissa on yhä sama stereotypia-ongelma kuin ennenkin, mutta sitä tuskin onkaan kovin helppoa välttää. Siellä täällä itse musiikissa puolestaan on sellaisia helmiä, että toivon bändin jaksavan jatkaa myös oudompien ideoidensa parissa - lakkaamattomalta introlta kuulostava instrumentaali It Got Born on tästä puolesta hyvä esimerkki. On hyvin vaikea sanoa mihin lokeroon tai markkinoihin tällaista materiaalia suunnata, mutta johonkin, kiitos, ja mielellään pian. Hieman pitemmillä biiseillä vahvistettuna näillä eväillä löytää varmasti kulttisuosiota useastakin skenestä. Ja tämän kiekon myötä on tullut osoitetuksi, että kyllä, tämän yhtyeen materiaali pystyy ongelmitta pitämään kokonaisen albumin mielenkiintoisena.

Zoomonk's style has gotten more uniform since last year's demo, Weekend Coctail. The problematic inconsistency is now gone, but has been somewhat replaced by a bit of numbness. There's a lot less experimentation and punk spirit, with the exception of a few select tracks (such as the roughly beautiful Shine). And the stylish grinding, which is this band's clear strength, does not get to shine clearly enough, as the average track length is just about two minutes. The harder the stuff that the band plays, the better the result - for example Cannibal is very fine in its angry kraut-ness. The vocals still suffer from the same stereotype problem as before, but it isn't something that could be easily avoided, anyway. In the music there are definite gems here and there, and they make me wish that the band also continues to follow its stranger ideas - the "unending intro" -sounding instrumental track It Got Born shows that side of them quite well.

It is very hard to say unto which genre or market this sort of material should be directed, but somewhere, and fast, please. With this level of quality, all it takes is a bit longer songs, and Zoomonk should have no problems in finding a cult following in several scenes. And this disc also shows that they do indeed have the ability to create entire albums that stay interesting all the way.
