Fjernlys - Within the Mind of Ghost

Within the Mind of Ghost on cd-muotoinen uusintapainos Skogholt-yhtiön kautta julkaistusta vinyylistä (2007). Se edustaa Fjernlysiä tyypilllisimmillään: Hidasta mutta suhteellisen runsasta koneellista äänimaisemaa, jota täydennetään pehmeillä vokaaleilla. Levy on täynnä kaunista ja helposti korvaan soljuvaa ambientia, mutta se ei rehellisesti sanottuna pääse loistavien Ascending Triads & Luminous Arcsin (2007) ja Beyond The Undulant Quiescencen (2010) tasolle, vaan jää vain keskinkertaiseksi.

Useasta kappaleesta (varsinkin The Point of Light) tulee sellainen olo, että ne toisissa olosuhteissa syttyisivät valtaisaan voimaan, mutta tällä levyllä ne pidetään liian hillittyinä, vakan allla. Mukana on monta raitaa jotka toimivat näinkin (A Gilded Sign ja kaikki kolme albumin live-taltioinneista), mutta nekin muistuttavat hiukan liiaksi yhtyeen muuta tuotantoa, yhden (Nocturnal Wine) ollessa varsin alkuperäisensä kaltainen live-versio.

Within the Mind of Ghost jättää varsin tyhjän olon. Ei siksi, että se olisi huono levy - sitä se ei todellakaan ole. Yhtyeen kaksi muuta albumia vain ovat kovin selkeästi sitä parempia.

Within the mind of Ghost is a cd-format re-issue of a vinyl published by Skogholt in 2007. It is Fjernlys at its most typical: Slow but multi-faceted machine soundscapes, combined with soft vocals. The record is filled with beautiful, easily listened ambient, but in all honesty it does not reach the levels of the brilliant Ascending Triads & Luminous Arcs (2007) and Beyond The Undulant Quiescence (2010), but remains rather mediocre. From many tracks (especially The Point of Light) one gets the sense that they would in other circumstances rise to great power, but they are now restrained, almost hidden away. Included are several songs that work as they are (A Gilded Sign and all three live tracks), but they too resemble the band’s other works a bit too much, with one of them (Nocturnal Wine) actually being a live take that is quite alike its original.

This record left me quite empty. Not because it is a bad album - it most certainly is not. The band’s two others are simply far, far better.
