The style of the Hungarian band Kriegsfall-U
can be somewhat summarized as neo-classical where the artists have also
dared to utilize noisy elements. Its rhythms are slow and surprisingly
restrained, resembling Sophia's early works quite much. There are
nevertheless a lot of pieces that are their very own, and especially the
skill to use those pieces in a smart manner. Because Kriegsfall-U is not
at all a member of the typical, posing mainstream of neo-classical music
- except for their lyrics. They sound very militant, but not over-the-top
so. The samples that are noticeable are in the backgrounds, and play a
clearly supportive part.
All this results in a strange reaction: to someone who has listened to a lot of neo-classical stuff, this album initially "sounds wrong". Luckily the feeling passes quite quickly, because this is a charmingly original album. It is at its strongest on tracks like Those Who Are Still Waiting: stiff speech, muted marching in the background, a bit of chorals. The vocals on it (as on the whole album) are completely in Hungarian, which fits perfectly. Occasionally an idea has been extended too far (especially The Great Man I. - The Stance is a good example of this). There are also moments when the music seems familiar, for example Porta Heroum is clearly similar to old Der Blutharsch material, but the language of the vocals keeps the impressions nicely from being too strong. In the name of honesty it must be noted that the cardinal sin of all neo-classical - sounding artificial - is also quite apparent in Kriegsfall-U's music. Yet the clever compositions cover the problem up very well. And an extra praise the band gets for remembering to end their songs in style: the tracks stay perfectly as individual works, but also keep up a mood that never breaks down. A mood that's always majestic, but never overly so. Deviates from the masses in a very good way. Highly recommended to all fans of the neo-classical genre. Jiituomas |
