Raison D’être - Mise en Abyme

Raison D’êtren uusi levy on aina merkkitapaus, varsinkin kun edellisestä ei-livestä on jo viisi vuotta aikaa. Troumin omistaman Transgredient-merkin kautta ilmestynyt Mise en Abyme on monella tapaa askel Peter Anderssonin aiemmasta tyylistä kohti aaltoilevampaa linjaa, jota juuri Troum tunnetusti edustaa. Tuloksena on eheä, kaunis kokonaisuus, joka on artistin paras sitten vuoden 2000 mestariteoksen The Empty Hollow Unfolds.

Mise en Abyme on ilmiselvästi tunnistettavaa Raison D’êtrea, silti sopivasti uudistuneena. Siinä pelataan artistin vahvuuksilla kautta linjan, mutta taidolla ja ilman hitustakaan itsensä kopioimisen tunnusta. Erinomaista ambientia.

Raison D’être’s new album is always an event, especialy since it’s already five years since the last non-live album. Mise en Abyme, published by Troum’s label, Transgredient, is in many ways a step from Peter Andersson’s more traditional style towards the wave-like structures exemplified by Troum. The result is a logical, beautiful whole that is the artist’s best since the 2000 masterpiece, The Empty Hollow Unfolds. Each track has its own, clear identity, yet the work really well together. The combination of echoes, simple melody and devoted mental states on the opening Abyssos brings the listener very close to hypnosis. The clangs of the following Infernos return the listener closer to reality, yet preserve the sense of an alienated, altered state. Katharos is like an extra track from Empty Hollow, and almost as good as the material there. Finally, Agraphos in its way combines the central shades of each of the others into a single piece.

Mise en Abyme is obviously recognizable Raison D’être, yet optimally renewed. It plays on the artist’s strengths all the way throughout, yet with skill and without the tiniest feel of self-plagiarism. Excellent ambient.
