Taphephobian dark ambient ei suoraan sanoen juurikaan tarjoa mitään uutta. Se on surumielisen synkkää, kaunista ja etenee näppärästi mutta yllätyksettömästi. Kuvaavinta on varmaankin sanoa, että jos otatte kasan unohtuvampia osuuksia Raison D'êtren tuoreemmilta levyiltä ja teette niistä toimivan albumin, se kuulostaa suunnilleen tältä. Anomie ei ole ollenkaan vastenmielistä kuunneltavaa, päinvastoin, mutta se unohtuu hävyttömän helposti. Se vain on taustalla kunnes loppuu. Tämä on sinällään sääli, sillä artisti onnistuu ongelmitta välttämään genren kaikki muut oleelliset sudenkuopat kliinisyydestä kliseisyyteen.

Taphephobia's dark ambient does not, to put it bluntly, exactly offer anything new. It is melancholic, beautiful, and proceeds cleverly but without surprises. The most accurate description I can give is that if you take the less memorable parts from the more recent Raison D'être albums and turn those into a full, functional record, ut would sound quite like this. Anomie is by no means unpleasant to listen to, on the contrary, but it's damn easy to forget. It's just something in the background, playing until it ends. This is actually a pity, as the artist has managed to avoid all of the other common pitfalls of the genre, from clinical coldness to being filled with clichés.

Unfortunately, in the mass of current-day dark ambient "quite nice" just doesn't cut it any more. Nevertheless, the sound tones here are fine, the moods work, and one some tracks (particularly One step closer) there are some very good original ideas. So you can easily find worse ambient to play as background music, and it may well be that the artist's next album will accomplish that which this one couldn't. But this record does not evoke any major feelings in me, neither negative nor more than slightly positive.
